upgrade my MDX to a Navigation

My wife has a 2001 MDX.

It is a non-navigation MDX - my question is can I upgrade it to have a navigation system. for example, if I purchased a navigation system from ebay (one that was removed from an MDX ) could I install that in my MDX and will it work? is my MDX already designed to accept a navigation?
Thanks in advance all,

Jon

I am no expert but I don't think it would work. You are better off buying a new stereo that has navigation built into it.

The system can be bolted up like factory, but making work is the hard part. You gotta do alot of custom wiring. Portable navi units are a cheaper alternative.

You would have to wire it up to specs of a NAV equipped MDX... DEF easier to get a portable navi, especially since you can get them so cheap these days.

:agree: or go with what Nuckz suggested.

On ebay they are now selling a complete OEM NAV kit with premade harness for $1200. Thats not too bad.

while you can do it, it would be CHEAPER to sell yours and buy one with navigation

akord 97 02-19-2009 12:13 AM

How is that cheaper? He'll get raped just by selling it.

FiftyFive 02-19-2009 07:27 AM

Well it depends how much he bought it for and how much he owes. I've actually heard of people doing this.

I have the same question

Just bought an 01 MDX Touring/non Navi and the CD player is broken so I want to swap out the whole unit for a Navi system/new CD player

Anyone know if this would work? I know someone locally who can wire it up for me if I know it will work

Thanks in advance :)

Yes it can work, if you wire it up properly. If you try plugging it without the proper modifications the gauge cluster will short. You'll need the screen, dvd nav drive, gps antenna, etc.

Ummm... but the Acura Nav systems in my 2009 MDX are just terrible compared to the best and latest dash-mounted options.

I'm an analyst in the industry, and I've tried dozens of devices from Garmin, Magellan, Tom Tom, OEM. Garmins are all I recommend to people. Get the Nuvi that suits you best, save yourself a LOT of retro-fitting hassle and money, and you will be better off in terms of money, time, and the user experience you eventually get.

I have the NAV in my '09 MDX and I use a Nuvi Widescreen when going places. It is easy to upgrade the maps, comes with me when I leave the car and gives the best resale value over factory Nav in cars. Ask a salesman he will tell you that most people wil not pay extra for a 2-3 year old Nav system when buying a used car.

I don't know about a 2001, but I had a 2008 RDX that I seriously considered putting in a Tech system. I bought the factory manuals, did some research and tore apart the console and dash. If you can find all of the components, it can certainly be done. Having the factory manuals, including wiring, is essential. In reply to some of the replies above concerning wiring being a problem, in the newer cars I found that all the wiring and connectors are there. The factory installs only one wiring harness for all trim levels. You just have to locate the unused connectors, plug and go. I was going to do it for the 5.1 surround system, not the Navi. If you are looking for Navi, I totally agree with above comments that you are much better off using after-market, portable units.

I wanted to know the same thing. except I have the system in my parts mdx truck

If I have a 2003 Mdx with the Navigation system. Will it be difficult to swap the necessary parts to my 2003 mdx that doesn't have Navigation?
